What’s the difference between a UX researcher and a UX designer?
A UX designer shapes the product itself: flows, interactions, and visuals, usually including some research. A UX researcher specialises in studying users, running rigorous studies, and turning them into insight that informs design and product decisions. On small teams one person does both; on larger ones research is a distinct role, which is what this roadmap covers.
Do I need a degree in psychology or human-computer interaction?
It helps, and many researchers come from psychology, social science, or HCI backgrounds because the training in research methods transfers well. But it isn’t required. People move into UX research from design, product, and other fields by learning the methods and building a portfolio of real studies.
Do I need to be good at statistics?
You need practical, applied statistics: enough to design an unbiased survey, understand sampling, and avoid over-reading noise. Much UX research is qualitative and about careful reasoning rather than heavy computation, though quantitative skill widens the studies you can run.
How do I build a portfolio without a research job?
Run real studies. Interview people about a product you use, run a usability test on a website, or study a problem you care about, then write up your process, findings, and what you’d recommend. A few well-documented studies that show your rigour carry more weight than a certificate.
How long does it take to become a UX researcher?
It depends far more on practising real research than any fixed timeline. Learning the methods takes months; developing the judgement to run studies well and land insight grows with every project. Conducting and writing up genuine studies is what accelerates it.
Do I need to master every topic on this roadmap?
No. Study planning, qualitative methods, usability testing, and synthesis are the core. Quantitative depth, research operations, and strategic influence you deepen as your role grows, and researchers often lean toward either qualitative or quantitative strengths.
